Old Man River

There are some things which cannot be learned quickly, and time, which is all we have, must be paid heavily for their acquiring. They are the very simplest things and because it takes a man’s life to know them the little new that each man gets from life is very costly and the only heritage he has to leave. - Earnest Hemingway, (1899–1961). "Death in the Afternoon, Chapter 16"

About Me

Old Man River

Remember the song "Ol' Man River" (music by Jerome Kern, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II)? The most famous rendition of it, one that is still noted today, was sung by Paul Robeson in James Whale's 1936 film version of Show Boat (Robeson had first performed the song in the 1928 London production of the show and in the 1932 Broadway revival, and had even recorded it with Paul Whiteman's orchestra back in 1928). The song also has versions in the Indian languages Hindi, Bengali and Assamese sung by Bhupen Hazarika, who met Robeson while studying at Columbia University. The Assamese song is called "Bistirno Parore", the Bengali version is "Bistirno Dupare". The Hindi composition is known as "Ganga Behti Ho Kyon." Instead of the Mississippi, the song is dedicated to the Brahmaputra river in the Assamese version and the Ganges river in the Bengali and Hindi versions. So, here I am, OLD MAN RIVER with his flow of stories and accounts, someone who has seen nations fall and be born, wars spread and ravage, homes created and sustained, movements launched and carried on with fierce passion.

MY WORK AND WORDS

Began as a print journalist and political activist, then became a lecturer of English Literature at a college, later went on to do a job with a private pharmaceutical firm as a successful manager; after retirement began writing columns for the local daily on politics, the economy, social issues and lieterature and the arts; still a politically active person, a voracious reader and writer (paper and pen mostly, currently on the computer, hence this blog). Seen seventy-odd years pass by on this planet. That's what my writings reflect.
